Panasonic showed two interesting slides at their Tokyo GM5/LX100 presentation event (Source: DC.watch). The one on top shows you how much Mirrorless will growth compared to the DSLR market. Panasonic expects worldwide mirrorless share to be 34% of all system cameras. Panasonic is known for their very reliable and non exaggerated financial forecasts (Source: Bloomberg). Therefore I believe their mirrorless forecast is also founded on a solid and realistic approach.

They do not expect Mirrorless to “boom” or quickly eat up the DSLR market. It’s more a of a slow process.

The second slide shows the progress on the German market. Here it’s interesting to see that Germany is one of the few “western” countries where mirrorless is growing fast. End of May 2014 41% of the system cameras sold in Germany were mirrorless!

As we all know the most “conservative” market yet is USA. But this will change in time too..

Unlike so many other companies Samsung is very openly disclosing the details of their new NX1 camera tech. In an interview at Imaging Resource Samsung manager Jay Kelbley shared many small details about the new sensor and other camera tech innovations. The video on top shows one of the new curious features of the NX1 which can detect a moving object and take a picture when this happens! Perfect for taking pictures of your kids playing baseball :)

Jay explains how this works:

Yeah, every four milliseconds, the DRIMe V hardware clocks in the image, searches for the ball, and calculates the ball’s position change and rate of change of position, and predicts the moment that the ball will pass the reference. The speed can vary over quite a range, but the hardware rejects objects moving too fast or too slow.

And all goes merit to the new DrimeV engine that can read all(!) 28 megapixels, at 240 times a second!

This is probably one of the most innovative products we had this year at Photokina. This could finally become Samsung first camera to actually generate significant sales after so many unsuccessful years!

National Geographic posted the list of “Top 10 Compact Cameras for Travelers”. Fuji, Olympus, Panasonic, Sony and Ricoh have been picked up by National Geographic Travel’s Director of Photography Dan Westergren as best cameras to carry on travel. Interesting to note there is no Canon and Nikon camera on the list!!!
