Holga is dead :(

Holga

Dear Holga fans…I have a bad news for you. Freestylephoto just reported this:

Freestyle Photographic announced today that the factory that produces Holga Cameras has ceased operations and will no longer be producing these Cameras and accessories.

The origins of Holga began in China in 1981. At the time, photography was skyrocketing in popularity and the 120 film format was most pervasive. Holga was introduced to the Chinese public as an inexpensive medium format camera. Unfortunately for Holga, no one could have predicted the enormous impact 35mm film would have on the Chinese market. In only a few short years, Holga was overrun by its smaller format competitors. Word of an all-plastic camera spread west and its popularity grew. Tens of thousands of cameras were sold in twenty different countries with almost no change in the original design. Holga Cameras have been a part of our photographic heritage for over 33 years and have been instrumental in not only teaching photography, but also in being able to express film creativity in the digital age. “It is with a sad heart that we say goodbye to a camera that has been so popular with so many.  A Holga Camera really is about creativity and unpredictability and a refreshing medium in today’s digital age.” states Gerald H. Karmele, President and Chief Operating Officer of Freestyle.  “Holga outlived many other cameras but, as like we have seen throughout the years, is yet another casualty of the digital age”

According the factory spokesperson in China, “…all Holga tooling has already been thrown away and there is nothing available for sale.”  Inventory is still available throughout the United States and around the world, but as units sell out, they will be no longer available.

A crazy idea: MOD sinar P2 project

Korean reader Chiek shared his MOD sinar P2 project. Chiek writes on LL:

a7 series mountable Sinar camera. It can fit Canon EF lens mount (AF usable, especially a7R2 to Faster AF) and copal shutter mounts. using sinar standard, It has very precision and perfect technical cam. I’m now searching most valuable lens in All focal length.

That “Universal” mirrorless modular camera is just an idea for now. And probably will always remain an idea :)

Samsung also ends Camera Sales in UK!

Bildschirmfoto 2015-11-11 um 14.41.20

Photographyblog got an official info from Samsung UK:

“We quickly adapt to market needs and demands. In the UK, we have seen a gradual and sustained decline in demand for standalone digital cameras and camcorders and related accessories. For this reason, we have taken the decision to phase out the sales and marketing of these products. This is a local decision, based on local market conditions.”

Now a spoiler alert. I am working on an exclusive Samsung rumor. Stay tuned. As there is a huge surprise.

Big Olympus/Panasonic firmware updates released!

EM1

MFT folks can enjoy the fact that Olympus and Panasonic both embraced the Fuji “kaizen” philosophy. This means the companies keep improving existent camera rather than focusing on replacing them with new models (read Sony).

The E-M1 and E-M5II got a huge list of new features. Check out at GetOlympus (Click here to read all details).
the GX8 and G7 got the Post Focus feature (av.jpn.support.panasonic).

Well done! Now Sony let’s see if you will learn from it…. ;)

First evidence Sony will announce a fast f/2.8 24-70mm FE zoom

After many rumors it seems like we got a first evidence about a new and first f/2.8 FE zoom from Sony. SAR reports the 24-70mm f/2.8 FE G lens got registered at Sony Assist system. Not sure though if it means the lens will be announced before the end of the year. And it’s quite strange to see that Sony’s G lens will be faster (and better?) then the 24-70mm Zeiss version.

Full Frame? Nope! Fuji will go straight for an interchangeable lens Medium Format camera system!

Image on top shows the Fuji GW690III medium format film camera.

In many occasions Fuji stated they do not plan to go Full Frame any time soon. And it seems like they really meant it seriously. But there is one major surprise to report today: Fujirumors.com said Fuji is developing an interchangeable Medium Format system! There is yet no info about possible launch date and specs. But it’s a very intriguing move from Fuji!

If the rumor turns out to be true that Fuji will place themselves a step above the Sony FE and other future Full Frame mirrorless systems from Canon and Nikon. They will therefore play in an own league with virtually zero competition. The real question is if the system will not be too expensive to generate noticeable sales and revenue. So please dear Fuji, make it “affordable” ok?
