The (100Mp?) Canon R1 ain’t coming any time soon

Multiple rumor sites are piecing together the little info we know about the possible new Canon R1 flagship model. What seems to be likely is that the camera will be announced in 2024 at earliest. So all rumored specs are only a wild guess for now:

  • 85mp+ sensor
  • 24fps mechanical RAW burst
  • big bump in sensor dynamic range.

But like I said, I would be really careful on those rumors. We already had some saying the camera would feature a new 100MP sensor and be announced in 2023….

2023 rumors: Panasonic S5II is coming in Q1 and the new S1II is coming in Q3

Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki: There new Foveon sensor is likely to have PDAF!

Sigma’s CEO Kazuto Yamaki has been interviewed by Imaging Resource. He said that there is a new delay in the Foveon sensor development caused by the worldwide chip shortage,. Their partner for the Foveon sensor development has to first focus on fixing their production limitations. There is also one more good news. When asked about the Foveon sensor having PDAF he answered:

In terms of the autofocus performance, the phase detection is the best solution. So I personally believe we need to implement phase detection AF, but we haven’t made a decision.

Fuji X-T2 will be announced on November 2 and take 160MP images…in pixel shift mode!

The Chinese rumor website CameraBeta claims to know the EOS-R8 specs:

  • Digix X image processor
  • five-axis image stabilization
  • full-pixel dual-core Autofocus
  • continuous shooting at 12 frames per second
  • 4K recording at 30 frames per second (without cropping)
  • 4K video recording at 60 frames per second (cropping)
  • SD/CFexpress dual card slot design
