Nikon 1 future (and Nikon financial report).

After that huge Fuji and Pentax news/rumor stream it’s time to talk about Nikon. First of all like Sony and Canon also Nikon had to report an ‘extraordinary’ loss (about $143 million) due to Thailand floods (Source: Electronista). Nikon 1 sales are doing well particulary in USA. But some of their new DSLR launch had to be postponed due the production issues. This is a bad news for a company that unlike the others has the camera business as their main core. Anyaywa, I hope they can recover soon and Nikon already gave us some hints about the future Nikon 1 system development:
Nikon told at Dpreview that the Nikon 1 sensor is capable of 2k and 4k sensor. This means future professional could support this. I am wondering if that also means that current cameras support this via firmware upgrade…yeah I know I am just dreaming. They also will add manual focus on future V1 bodies, improved hybrid AF and in camera RAW editing. One more news is that they are working on new fast CX lenses.
There is no hint yet about a future new mirrorless system with larger sensor. But sooner or later they will have to do it to cath up with Sony, Fuji and probably Canon.

4 months ago |I predicted that the Nikon 1 system will only do relatively well in North America, mainly because the Micro Four Thirds players have left the field wide open.
I think it is “selling in” well with intensive marketing but I do not expect it to generate much word of mouth, sales of lenses and accessories or future upgrades.
I’m glad Nikon launched the system as it showed their hand and future direction.

4 months ago |I´ll tell you, spit out a set of fast prime lenses and it does have future…
Make the compatibility of AF with g lenses not restricted to center point only and it is a must for wildlife Nikon shooters+basicaly most of DSLR Nikon shooters. Probably best teleconvertor, perfect for street, family pocketable even with zoom (if they are able to make it collapsible)…
I still think the choice of the senzor is a good one, unless you are sure that you can do without a zoom lens…
And .. keep the J series for teenagers, make the controls for V more professional.
Together with a FF body it makes a perfect combination and you are ready for any situation…

4 months ago |So the new Nikon mirrorless has to be made from scratch when I hear all the things they want to “improve”? Is the current Nikon 1 so bad then?

4 months ago |I think the current 1 bodies is like M8, an interim size until APS-C sensors support PDAF which F mount lenses needs. As soon as one company comes out with a PDAF sensor that supports PDAF, Nikon will release new body with new lenses that covers the bigger image cycle. Current 1 lenses will be used in the crop mode (akin to APS-C lens on FF body). A-mount lenses already have FT1 to focuses on APS-C 1 bodies.
