What to expect from Sony in 2017: new 70+ Megapixel camera, Dual card slot A7III, STF lens and 16-35mm GM

In 2016 Sony had quite a weird release strategy. We did not get any new FF E-mount camera but instead we got two very similar APS-C E-mount cameras. First the A6300 and then the A6500. Well 2017 promises to be quite different with a focus on FF cameras. These are the new cameras and lenses we can hope to get in 2017:

  1. Sony A7 mark III. Release before Summer. Has new 24MP sensor with improved AF and dual card slot
  2. Sony High End Professional camera (named A7rIII or A9): 70+ Megapixel sensor, duals slot card. Priced like the 1DX2 and D5.
  3. 16-35mm f/2.8 GM lens
  4. STF FE autofocus lens
  5. Telephoto zoom lens (like 70-400mm f4-5.6 G)
  6. telephoto prime lens (like 300mm f2.8G)
  7. wideangle lens (like 24mm zeiss)
  8. standard zoom lens (like 24-105mm)

And quite some folks on the web is joking about a new A6700 release too :)

Future tech news (Quanta sensor, Caos Camera and Metalens)

A quick glimpse into the future:
CAOS-CMOS Camera brings a 1000x Dynamic Range Improvement (Image Sensor World).
Metalens works in the visible spectrum, sees smaller than a wavelength of light (Opli).
Non-Iterative Image Reconstruction for Quanta Image Sensors (Mdpi).

Seomthing else:
New Fujifilm EF-X500 flashgun (Fotograficoweb)
4K video of the the Himalayas show with the Sony 6300 (youtube.com/watch?v=-hQURVc5Lv0)

Sounds strange but its true: Sony just killed the Fuji X70

Fuji had to discontinue the 10 months old X70 camera because Sony suddenly Sony decided to stop producing that sensor. Fujirumors writes:

Sony’s decision surprised Fujifilm, since it came without much advanced warning (usually Sony gives a much longer advanced warning when it comes to end of sensor production, so that companies can adjust their strategy according to Sony’s sensor plans).

LOL :(

Canon patents a “self bending” curved sensor tech!

That’s quite a futuristic approach: Canon patented a sensor that can be bended to become curved. But why does this make sense? Well all current Canon lenses are designed for flat sensors. They wouldn’t work on a curved sensor camera. If you have a sensor capable of being both flat and curved you can solve that issue. If you attach one of the current EF lenses the sensor gets flat. At the same time if Canon would release a new lens designed for curved sensor it would work on the same camera too.

Lenses designed for curved sensors have multiple advantages:
– At same aperture the lenses designed for curved sensors will be much smaller than “normal” lenses
– At same size the lenses designed for curved sensors will be much faster than “normal” lenses
– Lenses designed for curved sensor can bring you 100% corner to corner sharpness.

Will that patent ever make it into a real Canon camera? I doubt it…it sounds way too costly :)

(UPDATED) New Hasselblad X1D preorders will ship out in February.

What a bummer! The Hasselblad X1D will now start to ship out on February 2017 only(!) according to BHphoto (Click here). The camera was originally supposed to start shipping out in late August. That’s a six month delay!!!

UPDATE: Small good news: At GetDPI Hasselblad officially stated this:

Hi guys,
Our previous communication here is still very valid and we are fully committed to start fulfilling end-user orders this month. Unfortunately, we will not be able to fulfil all the backorders this year, but we are doing all we can to ship out as many X1Ds as possible.
We will communicate more firm dates and volumes shortly. We kindly ask you for your patience.
// The Hasselblad Team

So it seem the new February date reported by BHphoto is for NEW orders only.
