First leaked picture of the DJI Mavic II

Dronedj.com shared this first picture of the DJI Mavic II. And writes:

Improved form factor – The new Mavic 2 drone is sleeker and more aerodynamic than its predecessor, something we expected all along. At the same time, it is very much recognizable as a DJI Mavic Pro. Same color, same shape and the same folding mechanism it seems. Battery mounted on top and towards the back. Similar to original Mavic and not like the Mavic Air.

What’s in a name – The drone is labeled Mavic 2, which may mean that there still will be a Mavic Pro 2. The bands on the legs of the original Mavic Pro are gold colored. The one shown in the photo is silver, which may mean the advanced (or basic) model if you go by previous DJI drones (Phantom).

Two different sensor sizes – The photo seems to show two different sensor sizes. The one mounted on the drone in grey could be a 1-inch sensor, and the one in black on the table perhaps a 1/1.7 sensor? A big sensor will surely help you to “See the Bigger Picture”.

Gimbal – The photo also seems to show a removable gimbal, a la the GoPro Karma. If you look at the picture closely, it seems that the gimbal might just slide into the drone and thus can be used separately as well. To the left, on the table, you can see the second gimbal with what appears to be a significantly smaller camera/sensor size and a small screen. There is also a lighting connection presumably for charging. The gimbal mounting system seems to be a lot more sturdy and durable than what we currently have in the Mavic Pro.

Motors – The motors seem to be of a larger size than the original Mavic Pro

Propellers – Are not the ‘quiet’ ones we have seen on the DJI Mavic Pro Platinum and Phantom 4 Pro V2.0. Maybe DJI will reserve that option for later in the product lifecycle of the Mavic 2?

360-degree obstacle avoidance – The new Mavic 2 seems to have at least front and side obstacle avoidance cameras/sensors. Very likely it will feature the same at the bottom and at the back of the drone. Not at the top, however.

Foldable legs – We can’t see the rear legs of the drone but the front legs seem to fold sideways like they do on the original Mavic Pro.

Zoom lens? – When you look closely at the lens of the camera it does not seem to resemble the lenses OsitaLV showed earlier today. Unless the gimbal had been removed.

DJI’s postponed event – You would think that DJI already has enough on their hands with their announcement earlier this week to postpone the “See the Bigger Picture” event that was originally scheduled for July 18th. Now with the leaking of what very likely seems to be a photo of the actual product, the Mavic 2, I can only imagine the conversations that may take place at their head offices.

And here is the next new rumored set of Canon Full Frame mirrorless specs

For over a year now we keep seeing specs of Canon Full Frame coming and going and changing all the time. The latest one from Canonrumors says there are two cameras in the works:

Camera 1 has a 30.4mp sensor and Camera 2 has a 24 or 26MP sensor.

But my guess is that once these rumored specs will change. So take it with a grain of salt. Hopefully Nokishita will soon leak the final and real Canon (and Nikon) FF mirrorless specs!

Canon patent discloses a new 16-60mm f/2.0-5.0 lens for APS-C mirrorless

A new Canon patent application (P2018-106021A) discloses the design for quite an unusual APS-C lens for mirrorless cameras: It’s a 16-60mm f/2.0-5.0 lens. The lens is surprisingly fast at the wide end and comparatively slow at the long end. I don’t think I ever saw such a fast aperture on any Canon patent yet.

A patent is not a guarantee they will ever make this lens for real. But it shows they are playing with the idea to try out something new.

Sony A7sIII might be announced by end 2018 and feature 4k60fps recording

There is one last piece missing in Sony’s puzzle: We got the A7rIII and A7III and by end 2018 we shall get the A7sIII. According to SonyAlphaRumors the camera will have:

4K HDR 60P
The sensor is Exmor RS with new stacked CMOS sensor with integral memory
The number of pixels is unknown.
Sony is nervous about information leakage, it is difficult to obtain detailed specifications.
But according to sources, the A7S III is amazing, it is really amazing.
The sensor is technically superior to a9/fs sensor.

It’s likely this camera will also have the new Sony EVF with 5.76M dots of resolution.

New set of Nikon FF mirrorless specs

A post shared by NikonMirrorless (@nikon_mirrorless) on

Back in May we reported the Z-mount specs rumor was probably wrong. Well, today Nikonrumors indeed admtted that the mount specs might be wrong (or their sources did measure the mount differently). He also added some new Nikon mirrorless specs. And I guess we can expect some (or most of it?) to NOT be correct as this is yet unconfirmed by reliable sources:

  • Two mirrorless cameras: one with 24-25MP and one with 45MP (48MP is also a possibility). I assume both cameras are full frame (I did not get a specific confirmation on that).
  • Similar body size to the Sony a7 camera but with better ergonomics and a better grip.
  • 5-axis in-body stabilization
  • 9fps
  • New mirrorless mount. We already knew that,  but the number I was given this time is 55mm. The Z-mount dimensions I reported a few months ago were 49mm for the actual opening and 65.4mm for the entire mount diameter.
  • The new mirrorless mount will allow for f/0.95 lenses – remember the NOCT trademark and f/0.9 lens patents?
  • Memory cards: XQD and CF Express – now this is a surprise for me, but it is what I have heard (ProGrade is coming with a CF Express card).
  • EVF resolution: 3.6MP
  • Initially, three lenses will be announced: 24-70mm, 35mm and 50mm (I think the 35 and 50mm will be f/1.4). There is also talk about a 24mm, but it may come later.
  •  Pricing:
    • The 45MP model will be around $4,000/€4,000 in a kit with the 24-70mm lens.
    • The 25MP model will be under $3,000/€3,000 (also with a lens).
  • The official announcement is rumored for the end of July (on or around July 23rd) and shipping shortly after (August 23rd). This is the part I am not sure about because previous tips suggested a Photokina announcement. Maybe we will see the development announcement at the end of July and the official announcement before Photokina. I will try to get a confirmation on the exact announcement date.
