We are eagerly waiting if the new Fuji GFX100 camera will finally be capable to clearly outperform the Full Frame competition. So far it’s hard to rationally justify the price difference. Fujirumors spotted a new Fuji interview done by Pixel Village and Fuji clearly stated that:

You will be amazed by the image quality of GFX 100 coupled with GF lenses

APS-C vs FF

• Thanks to APS-C as opposed to FF, the overall cost of the system is lower
• Fujifilm has no plans to go full frame
• APS-C has the potential to get more than 26 megapixel, and Fujifilm will look for “opportunities” to go higher in terms of megapixel
• Megapixel is not everything. Fujifilm should look also at dynamic range, ISO sensitivity and overall image quality
• Image quality is determinated not only by sensor size, but also by glass
• Full Frame glass is becoming bigger, heavier and more expensive. APS-C lenses are smaller, bright enough and more affordable

GFX System

• current 44×33 GFX sensor is more than enough to deliver the best image quality
• No need to make a camera with even bigger sensor. Would have little benefits in terms of IQ, and big downsides in terms of size, weight and costs
• Current GFX sensor is 70% larger than full frame
• You will be amazed by the image quality of GFX 100 coupled with GF lenses

Samyang just launched two new manual focus Z-mount lenses:

There should be one more E-mount lens announcement in 1-2 weeks!

Today Canon announced the new SL3 and it’s the first time I see a title like this from DPreview. Canon’s new DSLR camera is that much disappointing even they couldn’t hide it :)

Canon promotes this as a Dual Pixel AF camera with 5 axis IS and 4K. But than the reality is:

• 4k is as usual cropped and not APS-C
• The Dual Pixel AF doesn’t work in 4K
• 5 axis stabilization is only…electronic!

It’s a joke :(

Imaging Resource interviewed Canon and there are mainly two hints about the future:

– Canon will be leveling up the sensor tech

– There is a lot more in the pipeline for 2019

Easy to guess the High End EOS-R camera is coming as next!

Sigma CEO Yamaki spilled out some beans in an interview posted by Dpreview:

L-mount lenses:
Sigma plans to launch a couple of properly designed mirrorless L-mount lenses in 2019. I believe those lenses will be available for Sony E-mount too.

X-mount lenses:
Yamaki said this: “Fujifilm doesn’t really disclose the protocol between the lens and camera, so we need to do the reverse engineering by ourselves.
It’s a really time-consuming process so we need to prioritize support for Sony E mount, our L-mount system, existing DSLR mounts and Micro Four Thirds.”

New f/2.0 primes:
Sigma is considering to launch smaller and more compact f/2.0 primes for mirrorless cameras

Buckle up dear readers: In February 2019 Japanese camera companies did ship 35% less cameras compared to February 2018. This is much worse than I would have expected. If that trend continues expect some companies to complete drop out of the camera business!

This is worrisome if you consider Nikon and Canon just launched their new systems and you would have expected to see some meaningful sales. Sony on the other hand did only launch one single system camera in the past 13 months. Maybe they are slowing everything down because of the horror market?
