What you see here on the image on top is neither a new fancy hotel in Dubai nor a hypermodern basket to feed your birds. It’s a new Light Field virtual reality camera! It has just been announced by Lytro (website here). All details about how it works can be seen on the video below:

Damn I like that thing even if I don’t really get it how it works and why I should need this :)

Lytro, for me, continues to be a brilliant answer to a question I don’t have. Maybe the vaporcam Light will illuminate me.

Light is for noobs, it already says all over the front.

Just in case you didn’t notice:

Those lenses are said to be plastic as well. But supposedly good anyway. I’m skeptical but willing to wait and see. But not preordering. :)

I think a couple of engineers had this interesting idea, but eventually found themselves funded by some highly stupid people. That’s how the final product and the advertisements came out the way they did.

That picture, this posting and most of the video doesn’t explain anything at all.
Only when you get to the part where the girl is wearing her virtual reality glasses and she is turning around, thats when you realize what applications this camera + server is good for… Nonetheless, epic… you know this will definitely bring a whole new dimension to horror movies and games.

It actually explains everything in the first scene if you know anything about lightfield camera principles.

But the moment when the video starts moving around will tell you what it actually is like. So you are not ristricted to 360 view from the one point of view, but you can actually move around and you can see everything from around the camera point of view. Meaning that you can’t see what is behind the boat, but you can get lower or above the actual camera position and see around the edges with limited capability.

That’s a fun air freshener dispenser;)
