Nikon 1 V3 and new lens announcement next week!

Nikonrumors is pretty confident that the rumored new V3 and  10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 PD VR plus 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR zooms will be announced next week!

These should be the V3 camera specs suggested by NR sources:

No optical viewfinder
Optional, external 2.4MP electronic viewfinder (EVF) that will attach to the hot shoe
Built-in flash
Standard hot shoe – you will be able to use regular Nikon Speedlights and the built-in flash could act as a wireless commander(I reported that back in November last year)
Several new interesting video features (sorry)
New external grip will not take any batteries, but it will have a shutter button and front dial
Expeed 4a imaging processor
Completely new camera design similar to the drawings of this recently filed patent and it will be all black (not sure if they will offer different colors)
Very fast everything
18MP sensor
Eye sensor and a button to switch between LCD and EVF
180° swivel LCD screen

T&T Camera Wrist Straps

Hello All!  As a fan and reader of Mirrorless rumors since its inception, I’m excited to be writing my first guest post here.  Some of you may be familiar with me, having done some reviews and tutorials over on my blog, but for those I’ve yet to connect with, my name is Tyson and I love photography.  This love of photography and photographic gear has seen my day job merge with my moonlighting job as a photographer and blogger with the building of my new wrist straps.  

 

I’ve been building, and shooting with my own wrist straps for about a year now and have fine tuned the process.  I use high performance, yachting rope and nautical rope splicing techniques to build what I think might be the strongest wrist straps out there.  While I’m going to stop short of saying they’re indestructible (they’re not) I can say that they are capable of supporting well over 200 lbs, and if you venture over to my blog you can see self depricating and hopefully entertainingly comical video proof.

 

I’ve got these priced at $30usd delivered within the US, $36 to Canada and Mexico.  They’re also available for £25 in the UK or €30 in the EU through my friend Tommaso in Italy.

Canon says DSLR are still superior to Mirrorless cameras.

In an interview with the Dpreview team Canon explained why they don’t bet high on mirrorless:

DSLRs can capture the moment better than mirrorless, because you’re viewing directly, not through an LCD.

Another reason is:

In the US, in terms of total number of cameras sold, mirrorless cameras account for less than 20%.

But Canon “will continue to produce new mirrorless cameras and although our competitors in this field are very strong, we hope we won’t be beaten by them.“

Well these are the official answers from Canon. But I do believe they know that if they would go serious with Mirrorless they would have two negative side-effect:

1) They would compete against their own DSLR cameras. Not a smart move seen that they are the king of the market.

2) They would have to publicly the Mirrorless cameras and this would bring attention to a market segment where the competition is very strong.

My two cent: Canon (and Nikon) will only make a serious mirrorless system camera if Sony-Fuji-MFT will start to erode their DSLR market. That’s it.

SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-II SD (In Stock) + X-T1 Combo Initial Impression

If you are waiting to purchase the SanDisk Extreme PRO SDHC/SDXC UHS-II Memory Card, I wanted to share the news that it is actually available for purchase directly from SanDisk and as of the posting of this article it is in-stock (albeit at a higher price than B&H’s preorder.)

Mine came in just in time last week along with the Fujifilm X-T1.  And I have to say kudos to the engineering gods at Mt.Fujifilm for bestowing upon us mortals the compatibility of their X-T1 to this next gen SD card.  It makes total sense…Nikon take notice. (XQD? What?) ;)

You can read on my initial impression of the combo on my blog.  I’d say it’s a “match made in heaven.” :)

I went to Yosemite National Park in California this past weekend to further put this union through its paces and I will be posting more in-depth user first impression and images soon.

New Olympus PEN cameras coming in May-June.

There is one big deal on the Olympus E-Pm2 double kit which now sells for $399 at Amazon. And the reason for such a great deal is simple: The successor will be announced sometimes between May and June!

A couple of store managers told us Olympus discontinued the E-PM2 and E-P5 cameras and they are now discounting these products to clear their stocks.

There is no info about the specs of the E-PM3 and E-P6 cameras but as usual with Olympus we can expect incremental changes only. Recently Olympus manager Watanabe also made it clear that the bets position for the EVF is in the middle of the camera in line with the optical axis. This rules out the possibility of a sort of “rangefinder styled” Pen camera.
