Andreas Kaufmann believes some photographic companies have a “foot in the grave”!

drkaufmann_leica_lesnumeriques

Leica Boss Andreas Kaufmann got interviewed by Lesnumeriques (google translation). Let’s focus on one single answer he gave to the following question:

Are you optimistic about the future of the photography market in, say, 10 years?

If all goes well, it will be a very exciting market with many new things. But, if everything does not go perfectly and deep changes are not undertaken, some competitors will inevitably disappear. Some have already withdrawn, like Samsung, others already have a foot in the grave. (Silence) I really do not want this to happen that way, because as a historical actor we do not want to see a long-time companion pass away, even if it’s a rival. But if they do not move fast enough, I greatly fear for their future. What is certain is that Leica will never enter the action cam market. It was launched, forged, consolidated and locked by GoPro, which have incredible marketing resources. Above all, this is a market that is declining rapidly and we do not want to be part of his fall along with GoPro. Anyway, what are action cams outside of  holiday? You won’t film yourself while you are working, will you? (Laughs) The only niche market which Leica has wanted to enter for ten years is the smartphone market. But hey, this is not really a niche … If you really want to make money, the film industry seems much more appropriate to me and I’m thrilled that Sigma think the same as we do.

I really would love to know from Kaufmann who those companies are. As I have no such power I will simply ask our readers that:

What are the companies that will quite their photographic business wihtin the next 5 years?

The full focal length and aperture GFX lens to FF equivalence

fuji-gf-lenses

Nobody did yet a real Full Frame equivalence of both the focal length AND aperture. So let me do this: The GFX lenses have a bit more than a 1/3 stop advantage. The below equivalence numbers are rounded:

23mm f/4.0 in Full Frame 18mm f/3.2

32-64mm f/4.0 in Full Frame 25-51mm f/3.2

45mm f/2.8 in Full Frame 36mm f/2.2

63mm f/2.8 in Full Frame 50mm f/2.2

110mm f/2.0 in Full Frame 87mm f/1.6

120mm f/4.0 in Full Frame 95mm f/3.2

Designed fast lenses for medium format is quite challenging as they tend to become very big. Based on those conversion I would definitely go for a 45mm lens and the 110mm lens. And you?

Choose the lenses you would buy along your GFX:

UPDATE: Thanks to Mike for the slightly corrected aperture info!

Hasselblad sold more X1D cameras in 10 days, than they expected to sell in a year!

ePhotozine interviewed Hasselblad CEO Perry Oosting and here are few of the key info:

1) Hasselblad sold more X1D cameras in 10 days, than they expected to sell in a year.

2) Hasselblad has a roadmap of 5 additional XCD lenses for the X1D

3) About the GFX he says there is a size benefit to the X1D, as the lenses have the shutter built-in to them, rather than having the shutter in the camera. And he expects the price of the Fujifilm to be similar.

Actually Fuji stated the price will be lower. Under $10,000 with lens while the X1D body only costs $8,999 at BHphoto and Adorama. The lowest priced XCD 45mm lens costs $2,295. Total of camera+lens is $11,295.

Rico Pfirstinger tells you quite a few things you didn’t know about the new Fuji GFX…

Yesterday we wondered how “different” the Fuji 50MP sensor could be when compared to the Pentax and Hasselblad version. Well we got the answer today via Fuji Guru Rico Pfirstinger. And he also shared a lot more untold news about the new Fuji medium format system:

  • the sensor is similar to the one of the Hasselblad X1D (made by Sony), but Fuji tweaked it in order to improve it
  • the final version will very likely have also electronic shutter
  • Full-HD with 30 fps
  • Contrast Detection AF algorythm is already surprisingly snappy. Best with lenses with Linear Motor
  • Bad News: only the GF32-64mmF4 R LM WR zoom lens has the linera motor (for faster AF)
  • shooting intervals of 700 ms
  • EVF:  3.69 megadots with a magnification of 0.85x (X-T1/2: 0.77x) with frame rate of around 60 fps
  • support for tethering with various RAW converters
  • RGB color histograms in the live view.
  • There will be a range of adapters to connect third-party lenses to the GFX 50S, including leaf shutter lenses for studio and flash work.
