There is live at Canon! First official statements about upcoming mirrorless products!

Finally we can give you some mirrorless news from the Canon front! According to the Reuters agency “the world’s largest maker of digital cameras, is exploring the possibility of launching a mirrorless model, featuring many of the capabilities of an upmarket single-lens reflex camera in a more compact body, a senior company executive said.”
Masaya Maeda, head of Canon’s camera division said “We are considering the technical aspects…We will launch an interesting product next year“.
Wondering if Canon will make an ultrasmall sensor mirrorless camera like Pentax or go for APS-C. Let’s see!

11 months ago |My bet is APS-C. And an adapter for their existing EF/EF-S lenses.
Or they can prove to be innovative and pick any existing mirrorless mount – m43, E or NX. (Because, well, in business of mounts reusing something existing, not reinventing the wheel, is indeed the “innovative” behavior). But I’m not holding my breath.

11 months ago |My prediction is that Canon is going to go full force with full frame sensor. This would made them ahead of the rest of the competition. If they just go 4/3 or APC then they just “another” mirrorless camera.

Well ahead of competition, immediately – if measured by the size of optics and overall bulk.

11 months ago |I am not confident as Dummy about aps-c
Canon is doing very well with entry-level rebels, i belive they wont want to compete in-hous, converting to a new format may make the costumer to “re-think” which formats he/she wants and perhaps even swich to other brand.
Besides, making smaller sensor mirror-less camera would tell avid canonist that DSLR is cool and for PROSUMER and mirrorless is entry-level for poor amatures, that way they can keep on selling DSLRS and try to make compiting mirrorless market to look as less pro.

11 months ago |… I could never understand that bit of “logic” used by some manufacturers.
But I have to give it you, Frosti, that that is too a probable scenario.

11 months ago |Canon is not ****ing crazy, so they won’t be releasing a product like Pentax.

11 months ago |well… canon can put the same sensor as their s95 and can still sell that camera just because they are canon!

11 months ago |I think that Canon may try something above entry-level cameras. Nikon, for example, will try a more high-end approach. Canon started video feature with a more expensive camera, so, after getting some know-how they may change the whole thing. Anyway, they will still use the same mount, it would not make sense to lose what would be their main advantage, the lenses they already have.
Mirrorless is the way to go, that’s a fact. Fuji is also trying to sneak into that. That’s gonna be healthy, since the technology will start to develop more and more, I’m waiting for global shutter MOS sensors! hehe…

11 months ago |i’m thinking aps-c, too. they have finally realized that mirrorless cameras from other companies are eroding their market share.
video is another strong argument for aps-c. full frame is too big for lots of cine lenses, and aps-c is a better match.

11 months ago |To avoid any kind of duplication in specification, I think Canon should produce a Powershot G series with interchangeable lens.

11 months ago |The reality is that DSLR world will die…soon.
Come on! Mirrorless cameras we saw until now were just the starting point! See how Olympus AF seem to be fast now…Imagine the improvement we could see again in one or two years…
It is sad to say…but I do think that our big DSLR’s will die soon enough. I think Canon and Nikon where to lazy with developing their systems…When we see the huge improvements than have been done on MILC’s in 1-2 years, we can fairly realize that Canon/Nikon were confortably sitting on their chair selling us cameras which were alsmost same through years without any innovation…almost.
The only thing which could save them is their High End Full frame cameras…but…competitors are so agressive that there is no doubt one of them will soon launch a FF MILC…As everybody is asking for it…

11 months ago |clown…look at the numbers.. canon sells dslr like mad while olympus is nearly broke …. selling the m43 crap.
you really have no clue at all… only some dreamworld fantasy….
Dude
11 months ago |Where do you find numbers that say Olympus does not sell m43 cameras?
At the moment Canon sells DSLRs, yes.
But that is ignoring the future.
It is pretty clear that entry level DSLR market will shrink in the future.
Ignoring mirrorless field means they will give away market share.
There is actually no big reason to stay brand loyal when switching to (or adding as 2nd) mirrorless.
But there will always eb ignorant people thinking a Canon mirrorless is the best choice only because they like their Canon DSLR.
And Canon can’t afford to let other brands get the market alone.
Just look at sale figures for Japan.
M43s is pretty big there and NEX just crushed in like crazy.

11 months ago |I think the problem for Canon is G series. S-90/95 are selling well and have room to expand. G-12, on the other hand is beginning to feel too large for the improvement in IQ. To improve things they need a bigger sensor, 2/3″ at the least.
Interchangeable lenses? I suppose they haven’t decided yet.

11 months ago |The Reuters article says:
“We will launch an interesting product next year,” (Masaya Maeda) said, adding that it would be small, but not specifying whether it would be a mirrorless model.
This sounds like little more than a vague assertion that they will release something, in a year or so’s time, that they believe will be a rival for mirrorless cameras.
It seems they are trying to cause some confusion, perhaps put people off from entering the mirrorless market for the time being. Canon can keep selling slrs and some of the people who buy them may start to believe that a compatible mirrorless camera is imminent, without Canon doing or saying anything substantive.

11 months ago |“We will launch an interesting product next year,” he said, adding that it would be small, but not specifying whether it would be a mirrorless model.
It will not. Canon has several times stated that the mirror is not the problem, size is the problem. My bet is that they’ll just do a rangefinder-like small DSLR, with their existing lens mount.
We’ll see.
J-Man
11 months ago |Too much like the NEX, and Canon will never share a mount with anyone.
“an interesting product”
*G12 with APS-C(built in zoom lens or interchangeable)
*APS-H mirrorless interchangeable lens system(APS-H finds a new home when 1DV goes FF)

11 months ago |My guess is that they will stick with APS sensor and their existing lens mount and lenses. What they will do is shrink the size of the APS DSLR as small as possible by getting rid of the mirror box and going electronic viewfinder. It will be a smaller Rebel without a mirror.
Maybe, they will also use a new mount with shorter flange distance, but will definitely have an adapter to the current lenses.

11 months ago |That’s possible. It took them a good long time to come out with the EF-s lenses. I’ve sold off a number of Canon lenses I wasn’t shooting with but still have fast primes, 28-75, 12-24 and my 5D (plus all my lighting gear, tilt shift and more) so I’ll just hang in and see out of curiosity. I’m actually happy enough with my G3 and old G1 and GF1 since I’m no longer doing commercial shooting so unless Canon would offer something really unique…..

5 months ago |Lets hope its full frame, otherwise Fuji will steal the show anyway. It would be some reward for people that have invested in “L” lenses already so that they can be mounted straight on
