I hope Marc Newson can make a better Pentax K design than that one :)

Our reader Charlie reminded us that Pentax has already shown a sort of K-mount mirrorless prototype at the Photokina show in 2006. I really hope the new (REAL) K-mount mirrorless camera will have a much mrge attractive design. And if the rumors are true than the Star Designer Marc Newson will be the creater of that camera and it will certainly be beautiful! For the record, he designed the Talby phone (Click here to see).
Exciting time! Pentax mirrorless, Olympus OM, Panasonic (?)….

4 months ago |I’m not sure why you like those phones. Let’s hope that the K-mount In no way resembles those horrid phones or the 2006 prototyp on the outside. The interface of the phones does look simple and easy to navigate, perhaps Marc will have a role designing the camera’s UI.

But Hey, it will make Pentax consistent in the beauty of their cameras.

4 months ago |Marcs design is Very good design. In my view. How the camera will look- when/if it comes- will depend on his ‘phase’ of creative expression… IF it has the look of this phone, it looks both expencive and sturdy. As the ‘Q’ does- so much- NOT.

4 months ago |What a crappy looking object. There was a time Pentax was able to design the most elegant cameras.

But you’re right about that thing; it makes a sack of crap feel better about itself.

4 months ago |Personally I don’t care for the style of this particular designer. Looks like a lot of failed product designs to me. Pentax should have taken a MX and turned it into a new EVIL body.

4 months ago |The K-5 is indeed a compact camera that offers all the goodies of a D7000 and 7D without the bulk. I hope Pentax can put APS-C in an E-PL2 sized body. Before that, NEXs still have the best design.

4 months ago |The prototype is really ugly, and also looks pretty un-ergonomic. But I like the idea of using the area round the mount as part of the camera’s controls. Executed in a more refined way than in this prototype, it’s a good idea – may as well use that great big protrusion required for the K-mount flange distance positively!
A new lens range which ‘sinks into’ the throat of the K-mount (while allowing normal K-mount lenses to be attached in the usual way) is also an interesting idea, as it will make the camera similar in size to any other mirrorless + lens combination. (Having our cake and eating it, in other words)!

4 months ago |Those phones are a really old design, think late 90′s or thereabouts and only for the Japanese domestic market. They were quite a sensational design in their time – long before every phone was an ugly black slab.
Marc Newson is a decent designer and am sure he’ll come up with something pretty unique, if a little polarizing. I still think this is a replacement for the K-r rather than a completely new mirror less system as such. A new design based around an EVF that makes the camera smaller, but not so much a new system.

4 months ago |That mirrorless prototype is not from 2006. It’s from 1997. At least according to this blog post: http://pentaxdslrs.blogspot.com/2010/11/timing-is-everything-important-facts.html , and it seems like he knows what he’s talking about.
At that time, it would probably have been more of a “concept camera” than a prototype for a real product, but still, not a good indicator of how a current/future pentax mirrorless would look. The way I remember it, everything was ugly in the 90s.
