E-P3 versus G3 versus NEX-C3 at DxOmark

DxOmark was very quick in reviewing the sensor performance of the three latest Mirrorless Cameras! The surprise here is the not so good performance of the E-P3. It has more noise than the G3 even if it has less Pixels. And Sony once again confirms that they are making the best sesnors (better than Canon and Nikon too!).

10 months ago |Sony producing better sensor than canon is arguable. But Sony better than nikon is obviously true.

Equally, if you compare 600D (scored 65), D5100 (scored 80) and NEX-C3 (scored 73), you’ll see that Nikon > Sony > Canon. Then consider price and the availability of lenses available that can exploit the sensor and provide full functionality and, well, Sony absolutely sucks (4 low to mid-consumer grade lenses currently available), whereas Canon and Nikon are excellent. All of this is quite silly, as this is Mirrorless rumors, and neither Canon or Nikon make a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. I prefer apples to oranges, how about you ?

10 months ago |first of all nikon’s 5100 sensor is made by sony, and secondly nex 3c performance is at iso 200 not iso 100, check a580 if you want to see iso 580 performance, but this is just one aspect of the performance, real world comparisons would be more appealing.

10 months ago |Yes, the NEX C3 is only worse than the Nikon D5100 (and D7000) because Sony has disabled ISO 100 on it. From ISO 200 on it has a basically identical performance. Maybe to reduce overheating during video? Or maybe it makes the sensor cheaper.

10 months ago |What a weird post. Comparing three mirrorless models and concluding that Sony makes better sensors than Canon and Nikon.
I guess it’s true about Nikon since Nikon don’t make their own sensors (but might design some of them). Nikon buys a lot of their sensor from Sony though and that makes the claim particulary weird.
I can’t see how you can say anything about Canon from the comparision you reference (although I agree that the current Sony sensors are better than the current, but older Canon ones).
As for G3 vs E-P3, no big surprise there. Olympus went with the old 12MP sensor (again) and even if it’s slightly modified for higher readout frequency it’s still basically the same sensor.

10 months ago |The Sony sensor in the Nikon D5100 is clearly better than the Nikon sensor in the Nikon D3100. That is the closest comparison possible as both are the most recent sensors from both vendors (similar price bracket as well, very similar release date as well).

10 months ago |yeah, just Olympus marketing make it sounds like a new sensor. its just the engine that is doing the majic.
regarding the sensor, i guess from now on, Nikon will buy Sony sensor only, and tweek it themself, which sometimes outperform the Sony equivalent. Canon in the other hand, has nothing interesting for these few years, and if you look at DXOmark ranking, Canon is far from the top.
I am not bias, but i do use Canon DSLR, LOL….
Hope Canon can play some catch up game!

10 months ago |The readout on the EP-3 sensor is clearly new, this allows the fast AF and the high video frame rates but the underlying pixel is basically the same (old) design that started with the E30 (or G1 or EP-1 if you want).

10 months ago |The sensor is really the old one, but Olympus tweeked D/A convertor, I suppose. I checked RAW on dpreview and it looks they sacrifice some DR to achieve better signal-to-noise performance (DxO mark proves it).
In reality it means: where on old senor there was more noise than signal, now there is only slightly less signal on the blackier background with much less noise => high ISO is really improved (less false colors)
